The Psalms cover nearly every human emotion and experience: Joy, anger, frustration, bitterness, fun, fear, cries for justice, hope for the destruction of enemies, gratefulness for good favor, it’s all here. And what that tells us, what the Psalms teach us, is that nothing is off the table when it comes to relating to God.
No matter how good things are, or how bad things get, the only real mistake we can make in relating to God is leaving something out. Or feeling like this thing I’m experiencing is too much, too ugly, too beautiful or terrible, not “spiritual” enough.
The Psalms can be uncomfortable. But that’s because they are honest. And they acknowledge that God has to be involved in everything in some way, or we are really in trouble! The Psalms teach us that in prayer, in worship, we can bring it all. All that we are, all that we are going through, and God is big enough to hold it. And that is really good news.
