Pastoral Search Team Update - April
Christ is Risen! For those who couldn’t join us for Easter, you missed quite the celebration! We watched and praised as many were baptized, including several who decided to take this step of faith on the spot, and enjoyed great preaching and worship together. God is truly at work among us, leading us, helping us when we stumble, and using us every day to spread His Kingdom throughout our city and our world.
Each month we like to provide a brief update on how things are going here at Discovery. We thought we’d start with a brief update from Joe Leach, the head of our pastoral search committee, regarding the search and then share some of our thoughts with you at the end.
PASTOR SEARCH COMMITTEE UPDATE
We conducted our first Lead Pastor Search Committee meeting on Thursday, April 13, 2017. “Who,” you must be wondering, “are the members of this mysterious, clandestine group of rogue archetypes?” OK… maybe your musings aren’t as “off the beam” as mine. While the committee is still taking shape, I can share a brief profile of your Search Committee: seven members (six were present); two women and five men; wisdom, experience and chronological ages span from mid-twenties to mid-fifties; and at least three ethnic backgrounds are represented. Once the final members are confirmed next month I’ll send along the names and likely bring them up on stage for an introduction. In our meeting we discussed our respective faith and life journeys both prior to and since attending Discovery. Much time was spent digesting our individual and collective SOBE stories related to the Search Committee process… Strengths, Obstacles, Biases and Expectations.
I am overwhelmed that our amazing Father has orchestrated such a group for such a time in Discovery’s history. I found myself being reassured by the end of the 90 minutes that HE WILL GUIDE OUR STEPS as we trust HIM… I’m not picturing the process akin to standing and waiting for the footsteps to form in the wet beach in front of us and then we simply step into those footsteps. The image I have is more like a bowling alley with the bumpers in the gutters… while we bump through the process, we completely anticipate challenges along the way; we can rejoice even in those challenges, however, because we know God is guiding us.
PLEASE pray for the Search Committee. Each member faces challenges in their lives: family dynamics, physical health hurdles, remote work situations, demanding schedules, etc. Should you have any questions, concerns, or bemusements regarding anything that has been (or not been) communicated, please contact me at email@example.com.
“But thanks be to God, who always leads us triumphantly as captives in Christ and through us spreads everywhere the fragrance of the knowledge of Him. For we are to God the sweet aroma of Christ among those who are being saved and those who are perishing.” (2 Corinthians 5:14-15)
Church, as we head out of the Easter season do so remembering our commission from the Lord – to be the fragrance of Christ in our everyday lives, to spread the knowledge of Christ wherever we go. Through the power of Christ we have been brought from death into life, and through the indwelling of the Holy Spirit we get to experience truly abundant, joy-filled life while we partner with God to advance his Kingdom.
We strongly encourage you to pray, to spend time reading the bible, and to take every opportunity to meet with and encourage one another. Join us the second and fourth Mondays of every month for a prayer meeting at the Downtown Center from 7 to 8PM, find ways to support those in your Discovery group, and in general seek out opportunities to share about Jesus with the people in your life.
If you have a need for healing, whether it be physical, emotional, or spiritual, please let us know. We are here to pray for you, to serve you, and to care for you in both the ups and the downs of life. Remember, it is in our weakness that God is glorified—you don’t have to hide your sins, struggles, or shortcomings here at Discovery.
And finally, pray for us, pray for wisdom as we lead the church, boldness as we too seek to share the Gospel, and courage as we do the work the Lord has laid out before us.
